theBalm and the Beautiful Palette (same colors as Muppet Show Palette)

Okay I am officially not allowed to buy anymore makeup unless I absolutely need it! I haven't really bought much makeup the last few months so all this theBalm stuff at such a good price isn't the worst thing ever, right?

"TheBalm and the Beautiful" palette is apparently the 2011 holiday palette and is basically the same palette (identical in colors!) as theBalm "Cast your Shadow" Muppets themed palette currently available now. Not sure why this palette was at TjMaxx so early, but lucky me! I actually think the packaging of this one is pretty hilarious. My mom loves her soap operas. I'm not really a huge fan of them, but sometimes I will watch them with her and they are just so hilariously dramatic. I think theBalm did a great job poking fun at daytime soaps with eyeshadow names such as "the guy who died but didn't really die," "the coma patient," and "the basket case." Pretty funny and accurate. Okay enough yapping, here's the palette!

Despite how cute the packaging is, ultimately I don't really care if the packaging is pretty or not. What I really want is sturdy and smart packaging. One thing they did with this palette that I think was a great idea was separate the powder products from the lip/cheek products below. There are two magnetized flaps: one is the larger flap that covers all the eyeshadows and a smaller bottom flap that covers the lip/cheek ones. This guarantees you won't get powder in your creamy lip/cheek products below since you can cover them while you're using the eyeshadow. Very clever!

Swatches:

Oil Tycoon: reddish brown
Estranged Mom: medium green with a touch of gold undertone
Supermodel: warm orange-toned gold.
Bad Boy: very dark, slightly reddish brown with subtle glitter

Southern Belle: medium blue
Mother-in-Law: dark grey
Guy who died but didn't really die: very pretty taupe! leans a bit more grey so it's slightly more cool.
Mistress: light Silver-grey

Step Brother: a solid green!
Coma Patient: frosty light pink with slight purple undertone
Policemen: true sky blue
Brain Surgeon: love this color! dark purple (leaning warm)

Neighbor: soft yellow gold
Stock Broker: white! it's a very smooth white though, not stark or harsh at all!
Basket Case: very light beige, cream
Older Woman: light peachy pink

As someone commented to me earlier, "holy pigmentation batman!"

Drama Queen lip/cheek stain, bright coral. this color is soo pretty!
Perfect Man: lip/cheek stain, cool toned pink
Evil Twin: lipgloss, nude pink. it is actually pretty thick and opaque for a lipgloss! on my lips it appears a bit more like a dark nude, but still very nice and goes with a ton of looks!

The eyeshadows are all amazingly smooth and buttery. On the whole, they are very pigmented-- one or two of the shades took two swipes to swatch, but that's not a huge issue to me. The shadows have varying degrees of pearly sheen (some more metallic than others as you can see in photos) and you won't find any mattes in the palette (sorry matte lovers!). Fantastic quality and you get 16 shadows! Endless possibilities really!
The lip/cheek stains are great. They blended really nicely on my skin and felt creamy and were very pigmented on my lips as well! The lipgloss as I said was creamy and opaque and felt comfortable on the lips as well. I haven't tested them out a whole day but the cheek stain wore for at least 4-5 hours today until I took my makeup off.

I believe the palette is normally $44.50 which is actually a very reasonable price for the amount and quality of products you are getting! I got it for less than $20 at TjMaxx so I definitely recommend making a trip to search for it there before buying it at regular price. No idea why theBalm is popping up in all these Marshalls and TjMaxx's but I am SO glad!

Also, please let me know if you want any specific eyeshadow swatches and comparisons! I'd be happy to do them for you if I have the color you want to see it next to!

theBalm Cabana Boy Blush

Here's another blush I snagged for $9.99 at Marshalls! Yet another winner from theBalm. Seriously, I am so obsessed with their products!!

theBalm calls it a "dusty rose sheen"

This color is just gorgeous. It's a rose pink blush with a hint of raspberry and plum. It's definitely not your typical pink blush. As with the other blush I got, Frat Boy (which you can see HERE) it's incredibly pigmented. It has a very subtle, pearl sheen to it (no sparkles). Because it's so strongly pigmented, i'd definitely recommend applying with a light hand or a skunk/stippling blush. Blended out it gives a beautiful pink glow to the cheeks, but be careful not to overapply (or you'll get clown cheeks!). Just like frat boy, the texture is very smooth and blends very easily so you can apply it exactly where you want. Packaging is cute and functional.

Here's some blushes from my stash I compared it to...
you can see a little more plum in cabana boy here.
Nars Oasis on the left is not really similar at all except for the fact that it's base is in the raspberry family. It has gold sparkles and is a bit more plummy and darker. It is definitely one of my favorite blushes, but it's really not that similar to Cabana boy at all. Cabana boy is also more pink and brighter on the cheeks Dupe averted!
Nars Mata Hari is definitely closer in color. It's a matte blush, so the texture and overall look is not the same. Mata Hari is rose pink blush but it doesn't have as much plum in the undertones that Cabana Boy has. I definitely recommend all three blushes ;)

Yet another fantastic product from theBalm. I really can't emphasize enough just how great the quality is!

What do you think of theBalm products and Cabana boy?!

Wearable Nars Mediterranee

I bought this eyeshadow duo (will do a post with swatches soon!) at the beginning of the summer since I'v been kind of obsessed with golds and corals and oranges. Of course, who isn't in the summer, right? This is actually the first time I've used it... I've been a bit intimidated to use such bright eyeshadow! It's actually a pretty wearable duo when you combine it with a dark brown outer-v and smudged liner!

Face:
Laura Mercier Oil-Free Tinted Moisturizer in Nude & Sand (mixed)
Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage
Laura Mercier Translucent powder

How would you wear orange eyeshadow? Would you tone it down or go all out bright? Next time I'm feeling adventurous I might try it with some pink or purple eyeshadow!

theBalm Frat Boy Blush

I was at Marshalls last week with my mom and i completely hit the jackpot! My store (and some other TJMaxx and Marshalls locations too!) was filled with tons of skincare and makeup items from theBalm! Even better was that they weren't tampered with! I picked up a bunch of things but thought I'd devote the first post to Frat Boy Blush!

theBalm describes it as a "peachy-apricot." on my skin i'd say it's a bit more on the peachy-pinky-coral side than apricot (i'd say colors like illamasqua lover or Nars Luster are in the apricot color vicinity!) It's a matte blush so there's no shimmer or sparkle, but it is VERY pigmented and smooth! It leaves a nice punch of color to the cheeks but not in an overwhelming way. The color is very flattering. I don't think it's too warm or cool so I can see it working on a lot of different skin tones. Even more impressive was how long it lasted--all day!

I like the simplicity of theBalm blush packaging and the vintage design on the front is really cute! It's housed in a magnetized cardboard palette...despite it not being in a typical plastic case, the cardboard is pretty sturdy. I haven't had an issue with it and as long as the packaging protects the actual product, I'm easy to please ;)

Here's two other matte blushes I compared it too...

L-R, Rock & Republic Bedroom, theBalm Frat Boy, Illamasqua Hussy
without flash
As you can see, Rock & Republic bedroom is darker and has a bit more orange to it. Illamasqua hussy is more of a bright pink and doesn't have the little bit of coral undertone that Frat Boy has. I'm definitely a fan of all three matte formulas, they all apply and blend beautifully.

At Marshalls I was able to snag it for $9.99. Pretty amazing when you compare it to the normal price tag of $21. I would have gladly paid full price for this blush, the quality is most definitely worth it. Search your stores for theBalm if you can! The only downside is a lot of items at Marshalls and TjMaxx get mutilated by rude and selfish customers, so I'll cross my fingers for you that you find them untouched!

American Apparel Summer Peach

Any nail polish lovers reading? I used to be a nail biter but in the last year or so kicked the habit (woo!). I've been using Nailtiques 2 to build up the strength in my nails so they're a lot stronger and they actually grow now that I don't bite them (duh. haha). Now that I have nails, I've been developing a new habit in buying nail polishes! Here's a swatch of American Apparel Summer Peach, one that I've been liking a lot this summer :)

Warning though, my nails are not anything to brag about, but at least you can see the color!

Summer peach is a really, really pale peach. I bought this color a few months ago before the summer and it looked really awful when my skin was more pale. It was just too light of a color for my lighter skin so i saved it for summer. I think this color is more easily pulled off on tanned skin. Now that I have a tan, I think the peach looks quite nice and it sticks out a bit more.

I used 3 coats (although it was pretty much opaque and creamy in 2 coats) and a layer of Nailtiques 2 over the top to seal. I found the polish easy to apply. I noticed it was a bit thick in comparison to some OPI and Essie nail polishes I own, but it was still easy to use! I believe it was 3 for $15 when I bought them :)

What do you think of this color? Any favorite summer nail polish colors?

Blog Malfunction

Hi!

In case any of you browse my earlier posts...I wanted to let you know that my pictures have disappeared from most of the February 2011 posts. They were all from my first month of posting, so I'm a bit crushed that the blog posts are kind of non-existant now. I tried to re-upload as many of the pictures as I could, but it seems as though many of the eotd's and swatch pictures from that month are gone for good (and I can't seem to find them on my computer anymore)/ I'm feeling too lazy to re-do all the posts, so please, please let me know if you ever want to see specific swatches or something from a picture that's disappeared and I'll retake the pictures if I can.
Thanks so much for understanding! Enjoy the first week of August, I'll update with more interesting things soon! ;)
